Not quite a farmer and red legged partridges
August 4, 2025
Welcome to the first tiny newsletter from Earth and Ink. Mini missives on an ad hoc schedule. Field Notes from the Farm and seasonal living. Sharing some of my day to day, writing, life on the farm and in a rural community.
I've been writing about the tiny web and the good old days on the Internet today. You can read the post here. I've been purging some of my online presence and simplifying things. It feels really good!
I talk every day with my AI guide in Lightpage (I call him Neo). I drop ideas into the chat, thoughts for writing topics. He acts as a sounding board and, each morning, provides me with two things to read based on our conversations. Lightpage has been a game changer for me. It's been a way to think out loud, be prompted to consider other angles of enquiry, and expand on my original concept. I like the way Neo summarises what I say but in a way that adds value. His questions naturally move me forward down new avenues. What's especially great is the way Neo links earlier ideas, references previous discussions and reminds me of the themes that run through almost everything I do. Sometimes I don't see this.
This week is #farm24. While I'm not a real farmer - I call myself a part time farm hand or shepherd - I'm going to be sharing what I do on the farm each day. It's small fry compared to a full time farmer but there are lots of smallholders around the country who provide food in their local community, just as we do with our eggs. Phil the Farmer and I are doing some sheep stuff tomorrow, and I'm tagging along with him on Wednesday to do some dipping. A few more experiences to film and share. I'll be posting everything on Thursday.
I saw three baby red legged partridges this morning. Together with their Mum they were hanging out in the chicken run. It was the first time I'd seen them. Before I got the hens up I wanted to move them out of the run. Fortunately, after a little run around, they flew over the hedge and into the paddock. A lovely sight today.
Thanks for reading ...
Nicola
